Este vorba despre o abordare antropologica a contributiei cafelei in dezvoltarea societatilor.

Stiu, stiu, asa am zis si eu prima data, dar este f faina, logica, bogata, articulata, cum vreti sa ii ziceti voi conversatia dintre cei doi.

Nivel grebla in fata la categoria manelizat istoria recenta.

In Malden, Massachusetts in the early 19th century it was difficult to be anti-social, the small community which had first been established by Puritans in 1640, was a couple of thousand strong, and therefore the chances were that by a few degrees you knew everyone else. It is for this small community ideal that it is strange that a man like Ephraim Gray chose to live there.

If there was one definition that would describe him it was anti-social, even his house carrying an aesthetic that reflected his avoidance of people, a large house that drove away visitors from its very appearance.

At some point during the first few decades of the 19th century people began to see him less and less, the few interactions he had had before this period were few and met with scorn for the community; so Gray’s presence was not missed. A man servant would be seen gathering groceries, and other essentials, leading to the question of where Ephraim money derived from, he had no career, no family, no romantic attachments, and never left the house. Further those that did walk by the house returned with tales of shut curtains and a horrible odour that emanated from the house, a cacophony of chemicals that drifted into the street like a miasma reducing the outside passersby to nausea.

What was it that Ephriam Gray was doing in the house? When asked, his servant gave few clues, and it was only upon the death of his master at some point in the mid 19th century, that the residents began to know the truth.

In his will Gray had left everything to the Man Servant, and all Ephriam possessions would pass to him upon one condition stipulated in the strongest terms, on no account was the body of his master to be embalmed, autopsied, dissected, or prepared for death in any way. Although the height of these burial practices were not achieved until the Civil War a decade later, this request was still met with strange reception, however the residents agreed that in life Ehraim was the strangest of men, and why should this bizarre behaviour change with his death. Therefore Gray was buried in Malden quietly in a coffin placed into a mausoleum.

When asked by the mortician directly why none of the usual funeral services were to be enacted, the Man Servant finally revealed the secret of Gray’s reclusivity and the toxic odours. Ephriam Gray a chemical savant, had been developing an elixir, one which would ensure his immortality, or at least preserve his body eternally after death.

The immortality part of the elixir it would seem had failed, and despite receiving the entirety of Gray’s estate the Man Servant died soon after, possibly from the unpleasant miasma itself which still clung to the house.

Twenty years passed, and the memory of Ephriam Gray faded apart from the aspect of his strange death. The legend reached the ears of a small group of medical students from Harvard six miles from Malden who, hearing of the elixir which had claimed to preserve him indefinitely, went to see for themselves.

Locating his mausoleum they broke in, and opened his coffin, where despite two decades with no embalming they claimed that his body was in a perfectly preserved state. The story then takes two varying turns, in one version; they reseal the coffin and leave shocked by the sight. In the second version they remove Gray's head, but are scared off by wardens and scatter from the macabre scene leaving the body and detached head by the coffin.

At this point a further vampiric legend grew in Malden, recorded by New England Folklorist Edward Rowe Snow who recorded the legend as thus:

“It became known that in the night at the stroke of twelve, the iron tomb door would fly open. Indeed, few Malden residents dared be caught there to see the fearful thing…The tomb door would swing ajar. Then the horrific, gruesome remains of Ephraim in its mildewed garments would crawl out of the coffin. Pulling itself up by the door ledge, it began to stalk about the cemetery as if in search of its head. At the first sign of daylight, it went back to rest.”

Decades once again pass until the early 20th century where a road was planned to pass through the cemetery, and the graves of the residents were all relocated to a new site. When the workers came upon the mausoleum of Ephriam Gray, they were surprised in moving the coffin that it seemed to have no weight, their suspicions being confirmed when opening the coffin to discover that Gray had disappeared.

We are therefore left to ask did the Medical Students steal his body? Or years after his death did the immortality elixir of Ephriam Gray finally work?
