  3. MV Agusta may be existing in a financial netherworld only the Italians could come up with while keeping a straight face. But it keeps turning up at shows with big stands and bigger plans. This year finally saw the 1000cc F4 break cover officially-and how.Not satisfied with a claimed 173bhp output from the radial-valved998cc engine, the boys from Schiranna shoved three versions of the F4 1000.Top of the pile is the limited-to-300 Tamburini, named for the bike's designer,916-boy himself! This has the more powerful version of the new engine, with variable intake geometry(TSS) and a slipper clutch(EBS),housed in the most fancy 184kg chassis you could imagine.Festooned with gold-coloured forks, forged wheels and six-piston brakes, and finished in glossy red and black paint, you'll either love it or hate it.We're not sure yet... The basic F4S 1000 loses the TSS system and has 'only' 166bhp pushing 192kg.There was also a 'Mamba' version of the F4S 1000,named after the African snake which rears up and runs after you. It's a showcase for the firm's tuning parts, and features lightweight Marchesini wheels.
  4. http://www.crash.net/uk/en/news_view.asp?c...cid=6&nid=81430 Crash.net can confirm that four of the six Repsol Honda team members directly responsible for running Valentino Rossi have left to join the Italian in his new adventure at Yamaha - with nine-times world champion crew chief Jerry Burgess heading the list. While official Yamaha and Honda announcements have only referred to Rossi's two-year deal, it has been no secret that the #46 wanted those who have worked so faultlessly for him on the RC211V to join him â but would they would pick Rossi over HRC? Yamaha have told Crash.net that four did, and Rossi can now count on the continued support of not only Burgess - a Honda employee for twenty-one years - but also mechanics' Bernard Anciau (five years with Honda), Alex Briggs (eleven years with Honda) and Gary Coleman (four years with Honda) when he throws his leg over an M1 for the first time in January. Rossi is said to have been so keen to have his crew move with him that he personally paid them a bonus, and it's easy to see why - Burgess (top pic) is the most highly regarded member of the Repsol team after Rossi himself, having guided the likes of Randy Mamola, Ron Haslam, Freddie Spencer, Wayne Gardner and Mick Doohan before joining forces with the Italian. The combination of Burgess and his highly skilled mechanics means that while Rossi will have plenty of work ahead to return the M1 to the top step of the podium, he'll now have the same proven people to help him. By contrast, Honda have been dealt a further infuriating blow to their 2004 preparations, and will now have to quickly recruit replacements to join the two team members - mechanics Dickie Smart (fourteen years with Honda) and Peter Benson (eight years with Honda) - staying to work with Rossi's mystery replacement.
  5. http://www.crash.net/uk/en/news_view.asp?c...cid=5&nid=81283 It's been something of a bad weekend for World Superbikes, with confirmation that Ruben Xaus will be joining Neil Hodgson in leaving the series for MotoGP â and that the Japanese factories will not be returning to field factory teams in 2004. Japanese giants Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha and Suzuki - together with Ducati and Aprilia - are all members of the MSMA, which has been in direct opposition to WSBK promoters FGSport over the introduction of controversial new rules for the 2004 season, specifically the dropping of air restrictors as a means to balance performance between machines with different cylinder numbers - and the use of Pirelli only tyres. Despite the opposition, some expected the MSMA members to back down â since they 'need' World Superbikes to showcase their machines â however, that hasn't happened and instead their stance has hardened and while Honda's new Fireblade will be raced in 2004, it won't be (officially) factory supported, being left in the hands of the Ten Kate team. "In light of rumors and misinformation regarding who will be competing in World Championship Superbike racing, the MSMA would like to make a clear statement of its position," said a public letter from MSMA secretary Takanao Tsubouchi. "A set of very fair technical rules had been agreed by all MSMA members in order to prevent unnecessarily high market prices for the machines that the series is based on, but the rules have not been adopted. "Consequently, the MSMA members have unanimously determined that unless these rules are adopted and the decision to restrict tyres to a single make is rescinded, MSMA members will not compete in 2004 World Championship Superbike racing as factory teams, and furthermore, will not provide technical assistance on a factory basis." However, Ducati will still be allowed to enter their official Fila backed team â but only "due to its pre-existing contractual commitments to sponsors." Thus, the Bologna based company, together with Foggy Petronas â not a MSMS member â will once again be the only official teams in 2004. "The MSMA is deeply saddened at having to make this announcement, but has been forced into the decision," continued the statement. "As motorcycle manufacturers, we have to take a resolute stand against technical rules that are likely to be detrimental to the interests of ordinary motorbike customers, and also against the idea of restricting tires to a single make so that a tyre maker can become World Champion just by buying the title. We sincerely hope that all devotees of the Championship will appreciate why we have to take this approach." The one brand Pirelli tyre rule also looks set to end the tradition of leading national SBK stars entering occasional WSBK events as wild-cards, since the majority of such riders are contracted to using Dunlop or Michelin rubber.

  7. Edwards 'stoked' after RCV ride http://www.crash.net/uk/en/news_view.asp?c...cid=6&nid=80593 Just days after announcing his return to Honda, following a debut MotoGP season with Aprilia, Colin Edwards today made his RC211V debut at Catalunya â and couldn't hide his delight afterwards. The double WSBK champ will ride alongside Sete Gibernau at the Telefonica Movistar Honda team in 2004, and got a brief taste of what he's been up against when he spent a few hours on the world championship winning machine, before flying back to Texas a happy man. "It is so smooth that it feels slow â although evidently it's not," the American told motogp.com. "The Aprilia was abrupt, peaky and 'torquey' but this thing is smooth â it has power everywhere. You can think of where you're going as opposed to where you've just come from â there's no need to gather yourself together, you can concentrate on what's next." The Tornado then admitted that, after riding the RCV, he now believes it to be almost unbeatable â thus echoing the words of Max Biaggi one year ago when he stepped from his Yamaha M1 and onto a Honda V5 for the first time. "I have obviously ridden quite a few bikes in my time and, after a couple of hours on this thing... I don't know if anybody can build anything to beat it," Edwards declared. "That is obviously just my own opinion but everything just feels so right. It will be difficult to build something to beat this thing." Having upheld Honda honour in WSBK for the past few seasons, it was a surprise to many that Edwards split from the Japanese giant at the end of 2002 â a decision made after HRC refused to offer him an RC211V with Michelin tyres, a combination he know has underneath him. "I guess you could say I have paid my dues for a year but now I am back with Honda and I'm really looking forward to it," he commented. "Circumstances last year didn't allow it but now I feel I am on the right bike and ready to get going. Next year is going to be really good and to be honest I just can't hide my enthusiasm for it â I'm stoked!" Edwards now joins fellow Honda riders' Gibernau, Biaggi and possibly Nicky Hayden as a genuine 2004 championship contender.
  8. Telefonica Honda has confirmed the news many MotoGP fans have been waiting for: That Colin Edwards will ride an RC211V in the 2004 world championship. http://www.crash.net/uk/en/news_view.asp?c...cid=6&nid=80440 The Texan, born in 1974 and winner of two World Superbike titles in 2000 and 2002, returns to Honda â the factory with which he won both his major honours â after a rookie season in GPs with Aprilia, in which he finished 13th with 62 points. Edwards will partner 2003 championship runner-up Sete Gibernau, in a strong line-up for Fausto Gresini's family like outfit. "I can say that I am at the head of a winning team â two riders like Sete and Colin are reason to have high hopes and expectations of top results," enthused Gresini. "Looking forward to next season, I think we have the potential to go for victories. I am a great admirer of Edwards â he is a rider who combines talent with determination." "Next year with Sete and Colin, Team TelefĂłnica MoviStar Honda will be one of the main points of reference in MotoGP," added Elena Gorostiza, marketing director for TelefĂłnica MoviStar. "After Sete's fantastic season, the addition of Colin will reinforce the potential of the whole team." Edwards will replace Ryuichi Kiyonari, who won't be in MotoGP next year

  23. Could the Aprilia 450 V-Twin be Competitive in Motocross? By Dirck Edge Along with the introduction of the 450cc v-twin off-road engine at Milan by Aprilia (see our story here), there are rumors that Aprilia will combine this engine with an extremely light chassis for motocross use. How about a carbon fiber swingarm on a stock bike? If Aprilia could indeed match the weight of the single cylinder four-strokes of the same displacement, it would undoubtedly have a power-to-weight advantage. Could it use this advantage? In my opinion, not in motocross. The 450cc thumpers from Honda, Yamaha and KTM still have plenty of development potential, and are already making more power than most pros need, or use (ask Kevin Windham). Although the Aprilia v-twin should, in theory, have a higher peak horsepower than a single of the same displacement, traction might be its biggest problem. A twin will have more frequent power pulses than a single, giving the 450 v-twin some of the traction problems associated with two-strokes. Motocross does not really seem to be the best arena for this powerplant. Supermoto racing, on the other hand, particularly on faster tracks, could be the place for Aprilia to exploit a horsepower advantage. Otherwise, Aprilia might just as well put this new motor in a trick, lightweight street bike.
